The shelter's mission is to provide a continuum of care and services to homeless and needy people, to help them rebuild self-esteem and move toward independent, responsible living.

Opinion polls show that the majority of Americans support solutions to end homelessness, and yet requests for emergency shelter services increased an average of 13% last year in 27 cities.
 
The number of homeless families with children has increased signifi-
cantly over the past decade; families with children are among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population.
 
At least 2.3 million adults and children, or nearly 1% of the US population, are likely to experience a spell of homeless-
ness at least once in any year, according to studies by the Urban Institute.
 
The Committee to End Elder Homeless-
ness reports that the number of elders among the homeless population in Massachusetts has increased signifi-
cantly over the past few years.
 
We tend to think of homelessness as an urban problem, but 30% of homeless people live in rural or suburban areas, according to the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers & Clients.
 
The National Resource Center on Homelessness & Mental illness has compiled statistics which show that 20% to 25% of homeless people suffer from mental illness.
